Kansas Higher Ed
Funding in Crisis: Findings from a Research Study
Commissioned by Citizens for Higher Education.
Citizens for Higher Education
commissioned national research firm MGT of America, Inc. to
survey the status of higher education in Kansas and
elsewhere. Here’s what they found: |
Public support
for Kansas higher education has fallen below national
averages and the Big 12 states since 1990. |
State funding for higher education, adjusted for
inflation, has dropped every year since 1990 while
enrollment today is higher than it has ever been.
State tax
revenues per higher ed student are 28% below national
averages and are the lowest of the Big 12 states
(Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and
Texas). |
State
appropriations per student at KU and KSU are lower than at
any other Big 12 university. |
State
revenues and appropriates were less for regional
universities and community colleges than at similar
institutions in Big 12 states. |
Kansas average
faculty salaries are less than the national average and
less than the Big 12 average for similar institutions,
except for Washburn where there is a larger number of
graduate professors. |
